One of the last books (the one before Dead Generation) I read was Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. "Her year of cooking dangerously!" Finding herself at a cross roads in her life she decides to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering Art of French Cooking in one year and blogs about the process along the way. I am a high school drama and English teacher and this gave me an idea... I have been trying to "walk the walk" not just "talk the talk...or in this case 'write the write". My 11th grade PreAP juniors have been keeping journals. A spiral notebook that at times have directed - teacher assigned assignments and at other times student free choice assignments to write. The purpose of this assignment is to get my students to practice the craft. So after reading Julie & Julia I thought ---let's step out into the 21st century technology and do our journal blog style. We are a small rural high school on the plains of Colorado and technology allows our world to be expansive and this should provide us with a real world audience.
I will ask my students to select a theme – event (something that will be continuous for the next 2 – 3 months) - mine will be the up coming play I am directing... The Miracle Worker. I'll blog about the process and progress. We'll see where this exercise will take us. I'm thinking it might be two fold with the following of the class blogs and the play.
So that’s the starting point…I don’t know what you say to wish luck to a blogger… In theatre you say “Break A Leg” from the Renaissance times of bowing and breaking the line of the leg – hmmmm…whatever…wish me luck.
Let the journey begin...if anyone out there has any ideas on how to make it better - please let me know.
